It may have been the opening weekend of the Rugby World Cup, but it was two penalty conversions on the football field that saw Shildon AFC collect all three points in their home Northern League Division One encounter with Whickham last weekend.
Joe Postill, who also took the man of the match accolade, scored both, having also been felled in the box to win each spot kick. Shildon were 3-0 up by the interval and, satisfied with their first half performance, comfortably saw out the remainder of the match.
Posthill’s penalties, scored on the half hour and the half time whistle, were the sandwich between which sat Leighton Harris’s deftly flicked close range header in the 32nd minute.
Leaders Birtley and second placed Bishop Auckland also recorded comfortable wins to keep Shildon in third place, one point behind the leaders and behind Bishop only on goals scored.
Next up for Shildon is a trip across the Pennines this weekend to take on Carlisle City who sit just two points behind the Railwaymen in fifth place, albeit having played one game more.
