Ferryhill Neighbourhood Policing Team update

An update from the Ferryhill Neighbourhood Policing Team:

Monday (11 Aug): Officers took part in their annual personal safety training, learning new skills and techniques around self-defence and restraint, ensuring they have the necessary expertise to keep themselves and members of the community safe. In addition, other officers made significant progress into the investigation of a prolific shoplifter in the Ferryhill area, in order to ensure an appearance at court following the suspect’s arrest.

Tuesday: A member of the public alerted officers at Ferryhill Police station that a male was unconscious in the road on Davy Street. Officers immediately attended the location and located the man who was unresponsive. PC Jones and PCSO Lavin quickly administered first aid and contacted ambulance who dispatched a rapid response vehicle. Fortunately, with the assistance of paramedics he was treated and is believed to have made a full recovery.

Wednesday: Ferryhill NPT led the execution of a Court warrant at a farm where suspected stolen equipment was being stored. Officers recovered a trailer, mini excavator and a road roller valued at approximately £250,000.

Friday: PCSO Lavin attended a community fun day in West Cornforth to engage with local residents. It was a great opportunity for children to have a sit in the police car, ask many questions and even turn on the siren! Thank you to everyone that came along and Cornforth Partnership for organising such a successful event!
Officers conducted arrest attempts for a prolific shoplifter, and are delighted to report that these were successful, with the suspect being located and detained following a short foot chase by Sgt Newman. Following the arrest of the suspect, Ferryhill NPT charged the suspect with 11 counts of shop theft. The suspect, Aaron Horner, later pleaded guilty to the offences in Court and he is due to be sentenced in September.

Saturday: A male was interviewed at Ferryhill police station in relation to a shoplifting at The Co-op and admitted the offence in full, following the collection of overwhelming evidence against him. He will appear at court on a later date in relation to this.

Sunday: Officers took part in Operation Endurance. After several reports in recent weeks regarding off-road bikes in West Cornforth. Today, Ferryhill NPT and bike section have successfully seized a quad and an off-road bike which were driving without insurance. We ask residents to continue to report these incidents as it is invaluable in helping us tackle this issue.

In other news: A number of officers from Ferryhill NPT are honoured to have been awarded a Commendation from the Chief Superintendent. Sgt Newman, PC Ditchburn, and PC Jones attended a balloon release event to assist colleagues in Newton Aycliffe, when they became first on scene at a serious collision involving two vehicles. The officers immediately commenced CPR on an injured patient, who despite the best efforts of emergency services tragically died at the scene. On Thursday 14th August, officers were informed of their commendation for the quick action taken in trying to save the man, whilst managing what was an incredibly distressing scene for all present. The officers’ thoughts remain with the family and friends of the victim.
