It’s that time of the year – Dean Bank Recreation Park will once again become the heart of Ferryhill’s Armed Forces Day celebrations on 28 June, writes volunteer community journalist, Mona Schulze. With England flags flying and a packed programme of free activities on offer, residents are expected to turn out in large numbers. The annual event has become a key date in the town’s calendar to show their appreciation for serving personnel, veterans and military families.
Curtis Bihari, the mayor of Ferryhill, sees this day as a great deal: “We are a proud, patriotic town with a strong veteran community.” For him, the day is an important opportunity to honour those who have served and show support for the Armed Forces.
At the same time, Mayor Bihari is especially looking forward to “the fun. Party in the Park is all about giving residents, especially children and young people, a great day out with fantastic entertainment and activities. And that’s exactly what our town council events should be about.”
The entertainment programme includes a range of family activities, from Crazy Golf, craft workshops, garden games and more. Through events like this, Curtis hopes to send a positive message:
“Times are hard for many local people, so it’s important that we give residents something to enjoy, bring families together and remind everyone what a great community Ferryhill is.”
Curtis believes towns like Ferryhill are too often “overlooked” when it comes to activities and events. For that reason, he said, the town council should make a special effort in this regard – and he has no doubt it will:
“I’m confident this event will show Ferryhill at its best – a proud town with a strong community spirit and people who care about where they live.”
For Curtis, the day carries a special meaning beyond the festivities:
“It’s a reminder that Ferryhill still has good things. It still has a town council that cares about
its residents and there are still people who are proud to call Ferryhill their home.”
