A prolific three-strike burglar has been put behind bars.
Colin Quinn, of Bessemer Street in Ferryhill was sentenced to 32 months in prison at Durham Crown Court on Thursday 3 March.
He broke into the address in January, this year and once inside rummaged through the victims handbags whilst she sat unaware in her front room.
The 41-year-old located a purse in one of the bags containing a large sum of cash, following this discovery he made a quick dash out of the back door with the cash in tow.
Quinn was however quickly identified as a suspect after being caught on the victims CCTV.
He was located and arrested on 2nd February following a number of enquiries to track him down.
He was jailed following a guilty plea at court.
This was Quinn’s third conviction for house burglaries, which allows a judge to hand him an enhanced sentence.
Detective Sergeant Sarah Hindmarsh, of Durham Constabulary said: “Colin is a repeat offender who has targeted a number vulnerable people in the area.
“This kind of behaviour is despicable and will not be tolerated.
“Everyone should be able to feel safe in their own homes and I’m pleased that the judge honoured this and handed him the extended sentence.”
