Electoral register door-knock set to begin

County Durham residents who have not yet confirmed their voter registration details will receive a visit from canvassers from Wednesday (20 August).

It’s all part of Durham County Council’s annual canvass to make sure the voter registration details of every household are up to date.

Forms were emailed and posted to every household at the end of July, with residents asked to check the information held on them is accurate and follow the instructions on the form.

From Wednesday, canvassers will call at the homes of those who have not yet responded.

They are required to knock on doors at least once to offer help to complete the forms and post a reminder form through the door if no one is home.

Steven Templeton, Durham County Council’s electoral services manager, said: “It’s important that everyone who is eligible to vote is registered to, so that they can have their say in any future elections.

“It won’t take long to complete the forms, and our canvassers are there to help anyone who needs assistance.

“All our canvassers will be wearing Durham County Council photo ID badges and hi-vis jackets, which should always be visible, so we’d encourage residents to check these before giving out information.

“If you are not currently registered, your name will not appear on the form we’ve sent.

“The easiest way to register is online, or you can contact our electoral services office and ask for a registration form to be sent in the post.”

Residents who have recently moved, or whose details are not included on the form, can register online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.
