Well, that’s it over for another year, and it has been far more fulfilling to host a coffee morning for Macmillan Cancer Care, than to send them a cheque for £50, writes Edwin McLay.
As it happens, I have just posted them a cheque for a very tidy sum of £563, after a last minute donation.
It was held in Ferryhill Methodist church, and I will be forever grateful for the help given to me by the church ladies.
I baked seven cakes and three big corn beef pies, and some scones.
We had a fantastic tombola stall, and Name the Bear competition, a book stall, and they donated all the proceeds from these, plus the takings from their coffee morning, to raise the total to £553.
Then I got a last minute donation from Anne Marie, lifting it to a grand total of £563.
My thanks to the donation from Emma, and everyone who gave me envelopes, the Co-op for donating fruit to fill my basket for a raffle prize, my good friends Karen and Rob for their help, their reward being the last six slices of banana and walnut cake left from all I baked.
I got to chat with several men who have a similar problem, and it was nice to know we all have dedicated nurses.
I still have a bad back from all the baking, and vowed never again, but here, you know where it’s held now, so 26th September 2026, come for your cake and corn beef pie, I look forward to seeing you there!
