Kyle David Garforth, of Auckland Terrace, Shildon, was before the District Judge at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court recently to face two charges of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
The 22 year-old pleaded not guilty and will now appear at Durham Crown Court on 22nd April.
The court heard that on 9th November last year, Garforth drove a VW Passat on the Shildon to Bishop Auckland Bypass when he crashed head-on into another vehicle.
His passenger, Luke Mills, a close friend, was seriously hurt, sustaining head injuries and broken vertebrae.
Paul Bailey, the second victim from the other car, suffered serious leg injuries.
The Crown’s case claims that Garforth showed deliberate disregard for the safety of others and black box evidence proved that he was driving at 67 mph in a 60 mph area when overtaking.
In his defence, Garforth claims that the accident occurred due to a momentary lapse of concentration.
