A 33 year-old man from Bishop Auckland has been arrested after he took a vehicle without the owner’s consent, before crashing it on Shildon bypass.
Kenneth Stephen Brown, of Douthwaite Road, Bishop Auckland, overturned the grey VW Golf close to Denhams Scrap Yard, resulting in the bypass being closed for around two hours.
Brown subsequently left the scene, but later returned, telling police that he had hurt his leg. Officers duly called for medical assistance and a Great North Air Ambulance Crew attended the scene.
Brown was later arrested and charged with aggravated vehicle taking, dangerous driving, driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence, driving without insurance and possession of amphetamine. He was bailed to appear before magistrates at Newton Aycliffe on 22nd May.
A 16 year-old male, who arrived at the scene after the incident had occurred, has been bailed by the youth offending service for obstructing the police in the execution of their duty, as well as a public order offence.
