Driver arrested following major collision

Shildon-rtc-Nov14A car passenger who suffered serious injuries when the vehicle he was in collided with another car in Shildon on Sunday 9th November remains in a ‘critical’ condition in hospital.

The collision involved two VW Passat cars, which crashed head-on into each other at lunchtime on West Auckland Road.

The first Passat, silver in colour, was driven by a 21 year-old man from Shildon who was unhurt; his front seat passenger was a 19 year-old woman from Bishop Auckland who received a minor leg injury and his rear passenger was a 22 year-old man from Shildon who suffered a serious head injury.

He was airlifted to James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough where he was placed in an induced coma and his condition has been described as critical.

The driver of the other Passat, which was blue, was a 46 year-old man from Bishop Auckland who suffered a serious knee injury. He was detained in Darlington Memorial Hospital while his passenger, a 28 year-old man also from Bishop Auckland was treated for whiplash and bruising.

The 21 year-old driver of the silver Passat was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and, after being interviewed, was released on bail pending further enquiries.

Anyone who saw the collision and has not been in contact with police is asked to ring 101 and ask for the road policing unit.
