Cricketers’ “Big Weekend”

Shildon Railway Cricket Club experienced mixed fortunes during what was their busiest weekend of the season so far.

The “Big Weekend” kicked off on Friday night with the Durham Cricket League F15 game against Tudhoe.

The match was well attended and the Sportsfield crowd was entertained with some sparkling cricket and accompanying music provided by BR member Stewart Joyce.

Shildon Locos, in shocking pink, posted 140 in their innings but lost out in the 14th over.

A beautiful summer’s night was thoroughly enjoyed by the biggest crowd seen at the Sportsfield for many seasons.

On Saturday, the 1st XI shocked 2012 Durham Coast League Champions Murton, by racing to victory in 24 overs after the opposition declared at 198-6. Martin Ferguson (96 not out) and skipper Greg Upton (79) led the charge. At home, the 2nd XI also enjoyed a convincing win, when Martin Horner (53), Michael Lumley (56) and Stewart Henderson (88) took Shildon to 240 for 3 declared.

In reply Murton were all out for 91 with Michael Condron taking 5-35.

It was back down to earth with a bump on Sunday, however, when both senior sides lost their respective fixtures.

At Mainsforth, the 2nd team looked in dire trouble when three wickets down without a run on the board but Michael Lumley’s 120 rescued the innings which was declared at 202 for 9.

However, this proved to be a misjudgement and Lumley’s century was in vain as the home side sneaked a victory in the final over of the match.

A very hot Sunday afternoon saw Shildon’s 1st XI host Mainsforth on the Jack Watson Memorial Day.

Several old friends of the club’s first professional, in 1955, and former players were in attendance as Shildon looked set for a winning total. Bret Upton led the way with a magnificent 107 but from 203 for 4 the home side collapsed to all out for 214.

Mainsforth eased to victory in the 45th over.

The club wishes to thank the people of Shildon for their fantastic support over the weekend and Mr John Pollock who sponsored the Jack Watson Memorial Day.

Saturday 13th July sees the 2nd XI entertain Langley Park with the 1st XI away in the reverse fixture.
