Communities around West Cornforth, are being consulted on planning proposals for future development of Cornforth and Thrislington Quarries.
Tarmac, the operator of the quarries, last week distributed information leaflets to nearly 10,000 properties in the neighbourhood and is also inviting residents to a public exhibition being held on Thursday 9th November. The Company already has planning permissions for quarrying its Thrislington site but wants to change the scheme over part of the quarry east of the A1M to enable continued extraction of construction grade limestone while retaining the chemical grade limestone that is of a quality for industrial uses.
Jeff Dunn, Tarmac site manager, said: “There is construction grade limestone in Thrislington East which we would like to keep excavating. Our strategy for the future sees working this area over the next five years followed by a move over to Cornforth Quarry on the west side of the A1M.” Cornforth Quarry also has planning permission but has been dormant for several years and the company intends to apply for new modern planning conditions, based on findings from an Environmental Impact Assessment, so it can restart operations there in the 2020s.
Added Mr Dunn: “We are inviting the local community to come to our exhibition and give us their views on what we are proposing”. The public exhibition is to be held at West Cornforth Community Centre on Station Road, West Cornforth, between 11am and 7pm on Thursday 9th November.
