Locomotion, the National Railway Museum at Shildon is the venue for a Classic Bus Rally organised by Aycliffe and District Bus Preservation Society on Sunday 28th July.
The North East of England was ‘the cradle of the railways’ in the nineteenth century, and soon a vast network of lines covered the whole of Britain. From the 1890s, the cities and larger towns were able to expand rapidly by the development of electric tramways, providing frequent and cheap local travel on a scale never seen before.
But out in the countryside, there were few convenient local links between villages and small towns, and the early motor bus was developed to meet this need.
See a variety of classic buses which serviced this region and beyond with Leyland, Bristol and many other types of classic bus, coach and double-decker on display.
Approximately 15 classic buses are expected to attend the event, which is open to visitors from 10am to 5pm, and parking and admission are free.
