Coronation weekend saw Chilton once again celebrate in style. Many thought the community could not top the late Queen’s Platinum Party, reports Town Clerk, John Robinson, but they were wrong, Chilton did it again.
The weekend began with the Mayor, Cllr Michael Young, accompanied by County Councillor Julie Cairns, members of the Town Council and many members of the community gather at 10am to raise the special Coronation Flag and to toast King Charles III and his Queen Consort, Camilla. The event finished with the Mayor calling for three cheers for the King.
Sunday was also a day to remember. The Street Party began in sunshine but, although the rain arrived later, this did not deter the residents of Chilton. Out came the umbrellas and raincoats, with some even covering themselves in black bags until the showers stopped and sun came back once more.
During the afternoon, residents were entertained by JD and the Woodsmen, Mama Z and Sedgefield Ukulele Band. All three acts received a rousing reception. The afternoon was topped off with our own legendary Brenda Collins singing Land of Hope and Glory, and the National Anthem. Children were catered for with a free fairground all afternoon and Parties by Fae kept the young ones well entertained. A great day enjoyed by all.
Afterwards, Mayor Young said: “We would like to thank everyone who assisted over the weekend: artists, fairground, office staff and guests, but above all the residents of Chilton who gave up their time on Sunday to both set up and take down the tables and chairs and tidy up after the Street Party. Thank you to all the residents who came along and joined us to celebrate this historic and momentous weekend.”
