Shildon Railway Cricket Club elected its youngest ever chairman at its recent Annual General Meeting. Bret Upton, who turns 21 this week, will take on the role.
“We are delighted that members of the younger generation are willing to step up to the plate and take on responsibility off the field,” said out-going chairman, John Brennan.
“It wouldn’t surprise me to find that Bret might be the youngest cricket club chairman in the country,” he added. “We all know of Bret’s ability on the field. He has represented Durham County at Under 19 level and this season won the North Yorks & South Durham Premiere League Division 3 Batting Award and was in the top ten bowlers in the division.
“It’s our job to support him in every way we can and hopefully this will encourage more of our younger members to take positions on the committee, thus ensuring that the club will be in good hands in the future.”
“I played most of my junior cricket at Shildon,” said Ben, “and hope that, in this role, I can give something back to the club, not just on the field.
“I promise that I’ll be trying hard and will do my best to help the club progress.”
Other officers elected were: President & Vice Chairman, Jim Robinson; Vice-Presidents: Peter Dargue, Fred Brownless, Jimmy Morland, Keith Robinson and Councillor Henry Nicholson; Secretary & Treasurer, John Brennan; Assistant Secretary, Norman Nash; Child Welfare Officer, Del Owen; Juniors Rep, John Young.
The new committee will meet for the first time on Thursday 3rd December, at the Railway Sports & Social Club, at 7.15pm.
Amongst items under discussion will be the Christmas Draw, to be drawn on Boxing Day evening and for which donations of prizes would be most welcome.
