A bomb disposal unit was called to Woodhouse Close Church on Thursday, August 20th, after the vicar discovered a hand grenade in a box of bric-a-brac.
The box of items had been donated to the church’s Furniture and Household Goods Centre, which provides items to people in need at a cheap price.
Police cordoned off the area before taking the pinned device, which was discovered around 1.20pm, to a nearby field on Woodhouse Estate, where it was safely detonated. The blast was heard in homes across the town.
If anyone would like to donate items to the Centre (minus explosives) they can simply take them into the church or call 01388 602935. The church also has a van and can pick up items if needed.
The Furniture Centre at the church is open from 9.00am to 2.30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays from September 8th.
