Last week was a mixed week for Bishop Auckland FC, whose win on Thursday saw the club climb out of the relegation zone.
The Bishops thrashed Ashington on Thursday night with Gavin Parkin starting the rout on 4 minutes with a fine strike into the top left hand corner from 20 yards.
Midway through the half Gavin Parkin added a second with another fine strike from outside the area – this time a low shot into the bottom left corner.
Darren Richardson added a third with a good header on the half hour, and the fourth came from Amar Purewal who intercepted a weak back pass to slot the ball past the ‘keeper and home.
A great performance which lifted Bishops out of the relegation places for the first time since October. However, the result in the Saturday fixture was a reminder of the hard work needed to maintain their status as a Northern League Division One side for next seasons.
Ashington grabbed the points with a scrappy goal on 65 minutes, after Bishop missed a series of chances. A string of yellow cards for the home side, and eventually a red, summed up a game where Ashington tried to stop Bishop from playing with incessant foul play, and ultimately this strategy worked as Bishop failed to take advantage from a string of free kicks.
Arjun Purewal was unlucky to have a first half chance saved at close range and Amar Purewal missed Bishop’s best chance of the second half when he pulled a shot well wide with only the ‘keeper to beat.
In their game on Wednesday night, the Bishops lost 2-6 at home to Whitley Bay. Despite their defeat they remain outside of the relegation zone.
