Bishop youngsters learn late lesson

Bishop Auckland Rugby Club Under 14s hosted Gateshead for their first match of the new season.

Gateshead kicked off, Sam McIvor caught the kick and set off down the pitch after gaining 30 metres and beating numerous opponents, he laid the ball off to James Pirie who opened the scoring with a try in the corner. Tyler Claydon added an excellent conversion to extend the lead. Breaks followed from Michael Walton, Pirie and Lloyd Purser who added another try. A further try was added after Purser chased down his own through-kick to touch down under the posts with Claydon adding another kick. The game began to change when Gateshead began to find their two big backs who Bishop found hard to tackle. Two tries before the break left the score 19 – 12.

In the second half Gateshead scored two more tries to take the lead.

Bishop came close from two penalties near the Gateshead line with Purser and Anth Young both held up by strong defence. As the clock wound down, Bishop’s heads began to drop and three tries in the closing minutes gave Gateshead a 43 – 19 victory.
