Bishop Auckland Town Council is proud to announce the return of the Bishop Auckland Heritage Festival, now in its third successful year with the Parish.
Taking place on Saturday 27 September, this celebration has become a highlight of the town’s cultural calendar, bringing together families, residents, and visitors to enjoy a packed day of free talks, exhibitions, and activities.
Inside Bishop Auckland Town Hall, visitors can explore fascinating exhibits from local heritage groups coordinated by County Durham Forum for History & Heritage, and enjoy expert talks, including:
- Frances Wilson – The Story of Crimdon Dene
- Harry Harbottle – A Miner’s Story by Greg McCormack
- Glynn Wales – The Anglo-Saxon Church at Escomb
The entire programme is free, fully funded by Bishop Auckland Town Council. Families can take part in a collaborative coat of arms workshop led by artist Wade Forster, while out in the Marketplace the ever-popular Northern Bygone Society Classic Car Show will rally vintage vehicles from across the region in a fantastic display.
Look out for Baccanalia at the event, who will be capturing local stories of memories from Bishop and delivering some interactive activities for you to solve!

The Bishop Auckland Heritage Festival has joined forces with the wider South West Durham Heritage Festival, featuring a programme in Spennymoor and upcoming activity in Aycliffe on Friday 3rd October.
