Ferryhill Athletic played their third cup game in as many weeks when they took on Newton Aycliffe YFC Senior in the Durham FA Minor Cup on Saturday, reports Chris Orton.
Due to Ferryhill’s midweek fireworks display at Dean Bank there had been a pitch inspection, but it was passed as playable. Prior to kick-off the teams and supporters observed an impeccable minute’s silence for Remembrance Day, as well as in memory of friend of the club, Jaroslav Linhart who knew many of the players and who sadly passed away recently.
It was a good start for Athletic who went on the attack from the off in a fast-paced opening. And it wasn’t long until both Alex Quinn and Michael Hogg had attempts at goal while Kieron Richardson, playing up front, was a constant threat. Reece Wilkinson was also very impressive from the off and got up and down the pitch with ease.
However, it was Newton Aycliffe who took the lead after fifteen minutes following a defensive error from the home team.
Their lead didn’t last long, however, as Richardson’s skill saw him get the equaliser a couple of minutes later.
Quinn had another good shot at goal, then Richardson got his second, snatching the ball from the opposition following a bizarre mix-up between the Aycliffe keeper and his defence.
Waddingham in the Aycliffe goal tipped a shot from Richardson over the bar just before the referee blew for half time.
Athletic came out for the second half constantly on the attack, with both Hogg and Cameron Wallace having good attempts on goal.
Wilkinson followed this with a great shot that hit the post. The inevitable third goal came when Michael Hull scored with a net buster that left the keeper no chance of saving.
Richardson’s next effort flew wide of the post, as the game descended into a scrappy spell before Aycliffe had a second shot on goal and somehow the ball crept into the net.
Athletic realised they had to step up a gear and substitute Nile Rutter got the fourth, turning the ball into the net at the left post.
Richardson had definitely found his scoring boots by now, as he got goals five and six with two superb finishes in quick succession.
On a day that Niall Seymour deservedly took the Man of the Match award, the home crowd saw a much more positive performance and a return to winning ways, which the club hopes will continue next weekend when they are back on league duty. Athletic will travel to the coast to face FC Hartlepool Reserves at Grayfield’s Enclosure. The match kicks off at 2pm.
