April’s Mayor Award was presented to long servicing lollipop lady Audrey Simpson by Shildon Mayor, Cllr Shirley Quinn, at this month’s council meeting. Audrey is still getting over the shock of being asked to accept the award but was also delighted.
In June, Audrey will be 69 years old and has carried out her role since 5th November 2002 at Timothy Hackworth Primary School, Byerley Road, Shildon. She was initially approached by the retiring Crossing Patrol Officer, Lillian Breedon, who thought that she would be ideal for the job.
Audrey recalls Lillian telling her that she had done the job for 15 years – she replied that she would not be doing it as long as that! Over 21 years later, Audrey is still standing proud, now helping a second generation of children to cross the road safely. Audrey says that both the adults and children are a delight and has many a kind word or conversation while she carries out her very important role.
Unfortunately, with the volume of traffic having increased and some people’s lack of care and attention regarding the safety of children, there are daily issues around the school. Problems like speeding cars, drivers not stopping when Audrey has her sign clearly displayed, parking on the junctions, reversing on Oxford Street as children try to cross the road, using the voluntary one-way system inappropriately and many more. Initiatives and constant monitoring by teaching staff helps, but the plea to all drivers around our schools is to be considerate and mindful of others when using cars.
Audrey also has the role of supervisory assistant at Shildon’s Thornhill Primary School, where she attends to hear children read. Audrey has done this for the last 30 years, again now listening to a second generation of children. Audrey’s devotion to her town and in particular it’s school children, has earned her this well deserved recognition.
