The Roman Empire firmly left its mark on the North East of England, from Binchester to Chester-le-Street and of course its most northerly, defended border – Hadrian’s Wall!
Now spring has finally sprung, there is no better time to follow in the footsteps of a Roman soldier and experience life at the tip of the empire without it costing hordes of gold, thanks to the National Lottery.
During National Lottery open week (Saturday 9th – Sunday 17th March) MAGNA Roman Army Museum; along with many lottery funded venues, have been opening their doors with offers ranging from free entry, 2 for 1 and player discounts.
Archaeology News North East visited Magna before the doors officially opened to the public for their second season of archaeological excavations. The Roman Army Museum, situated close to Hadrian’s Wall was the setting for this month’s episode of Tales from the Trowel.
As the wind ripped through the valley and the rain hammered the windows of the new café and gift shop, we spoke to Activity and Diversity Officer Sophie and Senior Archaeologist Rachel to hear about the daily life of a soldier in the Roman army stationed at Hadrian’s Wall. We also discussed the role of taxation, and the impact of the wall on local communities and their interactions with northern tribes!
The excitement of current excavations was infectious to see and hear, as Rachel revealed the significance of the site and its role within the wider Roman community and even some roman remains!
But there is also a feeling of urgency for the Trust. The once wetland and peatbogs are drying out, exposing the archaeology under the surface. However, as the earthy protection decreases, the exposed structures are at an increased risk of destruction, so a race against time (and the elements) has begun to document and preserve as much as they can before the landscape changes forever.
