Shildon Railway Cricket Club enjoyed a successful season, reports John Brennan.
The 1st team finished fourth in the North Yorks & South Durham Premier Cricket League Division Two and the second team finished runners up in the Darlington District Cricket League Division C, thereby winning promotion to Division B.
The second team also won the Division C Cup, as well as reaching the final of the FB Howell Trophy, which fell foul of the weather as the match against Haughton was heading towards a tremendous finish. The final will now be played next May.
However, work now begins on the 2024 season. The cricket square has been scarified, seeded and had ninety bags of loam spread over it. In a few weeks, the square will be fertilized, de-wormed and new growth cut.
People used to use the phrase putting the square to bed, but this would certainly annoy cricket groundsmen, as work continues through early winter and early spring. All of this takes time and money.
The committee will be busy fundraising, seeking new players and applying for grants, amongst other things, throughout the winter.
The club will also hold its Annual Presentation Night soon, with the date to be decided imminently.
The next monthly committee meeting is on Thursday 2 November with the Club’s Annual General Meeting scheduled for Thursday 23 November at 7.30pm.
The NYSD Presentation Night will be held at Hardwick Hall on Saturday 11 November.
