It was sunny but cold at Broom Rec on Sunday morning as Ferryhill Town Youth’s Under 10s played host to higher league opposition in Normanby United of the North Riding Division Three in the Challenge Cup.
Ferryhill started well with a new formation and players in new positions. Reuban took over in goal and throughout the first half he was almost a spectator as Ferryhill played out from the back and created some good chances.
William got the home team off to a good start, scoring from distance after a good move with Marc on the left.
Ferryhill shored up any attack as Noah and Carlton kept the Normanby forwards quiet.
George and Marc were up and down the wings creating chances for William and Zach.
As the first half drew to a close, William picked the ball up outside the area and smashed his shot just under the crossbar, giving the keeper no chance and sending the home team into the break with a 2-0 advantage.
Aaron and Jamie came on for the hardworking George and Zach for the second half, with Ferryhill playing against the wind and slope of the pitch, but it couldn’t have started any better.
An attack for Ferryhill ended up dropping to the feet of Jamie who finished well.
It wasn’t long before Normanby upped their game and got back into it with a good goal.
They kept the pressure on but some good defending from Addison kept them out and Reuban made two point-blank saves when faced one-on-one, which ultimately put Ferryhill through.
After plenty of Normanby pressure, Ferryhill held on for a well deserved victory over a team from a division above.
Coach Paul McKeown said: “It was a fantastic team performance with everyone playing their part, but for his two goals, William was awarded Man of the Match.”
The second game saw Jamie in goal behind Addison and Sam who performed well as Normanby drove forward. Reuban started up front but popped up all over the pitch to try and win the ball for the home team.
It was Normanby though who took the lead as Ferryhill backed off allowing them to play in front of goal and finish well.
It wasn’t all one way traffic as Ferryhill kept breaking on the counter attack and, after a couple of chances, a shot from Zach beat the keeper and Aaron followed up to make sure it went over and took the sides into the break on level pegging. The second half was again very close but there were chances created by both sides.
The away team retook the lead with a good goal from just inside the box.
With 10 minutes to go, Layton Hunt came on to make his debut and made a couple of good runs to try and create something for an equaliser, but it wasn’t to be and Normanby ran out 2-1 winners.
