Young chess players invited to fun day

Young chess players of all abilities from Shildon and across the county are invited to participate in a Chess Fun Day and tournament organised by Durham City Chess Club.

The event will take place at Coxhoe Village Hall on Saturday 23rd January from 1.15pm until 4.45pm.

A spokesperson said: “We hope to encourage new players as well as give more experienced players the opportunity to practice.

“The afternoon will involve playing chess games and solving chess puzzles.

“There will be some small prizes, but the aim is as much about fun and practice as serious competition.

“The event, which is open to juniors of all abilities, including novices, is not a knockout competition so all players will participate throughout the afternoon.

“So, if you know the basic moves and are interested in finding out more, come along. No previous tournament experience is needed.”

Entrants will be put into self-selected groups according to ability rather than age – provisionally they will be grouped as novice, intermediate or expert.

Light refreshments including tea and coffee, juice, biscuits and crisps will be on sale, but participants are also free to bring their own.

The entry fee is just £4 per player and can be paid on the day. However, organisers are asking that interested parties register by emailing douglas@djssmith.com.

More information can be found on the tournaments tab of the club website at www.durhamcitychess.co.uk.
