Year 6 prepare for secondary school

Year 6 children of Saint John’s CofE (Aided) Primary headed to Durham Cathedral last week to join church schools from across the diocese as they reflected together on the coming changes.

The end of Year 6 can be an emotional time with many children finding the transition to secondary school both exciting and scary.

Every year, as part of the Saint John’s Schools commitment to support the pupils in coping with change, Year 6 visit the Cathedral.

Once there, they had the opportunity to engage in activities around the Cathedral, enjoying the building as they went.

With a chance to write their worries, to put themselves into an enormous jigsaw and make flags celebrating the good moments of primary school, there was a buzz of conversation and laughter.

Following the activities the children gathered with the rest of the schools present to listen to Bishop Paul Butler, the Bishop of Durham, talk about the importance of knowing that each child really matters.

As they climbed on the bus to return home, one child commented, “That was awesome, when are we coming again?”
