Welding apprentice excels

Shildon apprentice, Nathan Matthews, who works at DJ Camp Fabrications based in the town, has won the Fabrication and Welding overall college intermediate Apprentice of the Year and the Course Achievement Award in Fabrication and Welding Engineering Technologies at New College Durham recently.

Mark Anderson, Vice- Principle New College Durham said: “Nathan’s achievements this year have been substantial.

“He has excelled both at College and in the workplace and regularly produces high quality work equal to those with significant more experience in fabrication and welding.

Steve Bassett Operations Director at DJ Camp echoed Mr Anderson, saying: “I regularly forget Nathan is an apprentice due to his wide range of skills and the quality of work he turns out. I task him with jobs at the same level as our timed served fabricators and often Nathans work will outshine the rest.

His course lecturer, Christopher Dawson added: “Nathan has demonstrated outstanding skills and knowledge in his studies and in the workplace.

“He is currently competing in the World Skills UK Construction Metalwork competition and competing in the final at the NEC in November with a chance to be selected to represent Team GB in World Skills in 2019 in Russia.”
