The Pineapple Gallery in Bishop Auckland is proud to present two forthcoming exhibitions by acclaimed landscape painter John Creighton, offering audiences an intimate journey through his distinctive vision of the North York Moors.
The first exhibition, Chiaroscuro: Studies in Light and Shade (12–26 September), explores the drama of contrast through Creighton’s mastery of tone and atmosphere.
This will be followed by Sacred Landscape (30 October–21 November), a contemplative series that reflects his profound connection to the land and its spiritual resonance.
John Creighton’s artistic journey is deeply rooted in the countryside of the North York Moors, where he continues a family legacy established by his father, Lewis Creighton, also a painter.
Working from the same cottage his father once occupied, Creighton describes a “genetic connection to the land around him,” regarding the landscape as sacred and painting as “a form of meditation.”
Standing in the tradition of English landscape painters such as Constable, Palmer, and Sutherland, Creighton also draws inspiration from Corot, Blake, and Van Gogh.
His work employs classical techniques including grisaille, tonalism, and chiaroscuro, capturing the brilliance of sunlight in striking contrast with the deep, mysterious shadows of woodland glades, ancient buildings, and the undulating contours of the land.
Creighton’s paintings have been exhibited in prestigious venues including the Royal Academy in London, and the Mercer Gallery in Harrogate.
This autumn, his work takes centre stage with two special exhibitions at the Pineapple Gallery, where his unique vision continues to captivate audiences.
