A tree has been planted at King James I Academy to mark the beginning of the multi-million pound building project that will see the academy transformed by September next year. Representatives from the Education Funding Agency and construction firm, Sir Robert McAlpine Ltd, who are building the new school, joined staff, students, governors and special guests to witness the tree planting ceremony outside Middle School, the existing Grade II listed building which was opened in 1910.
This historic Edwardian building and the adjacent dinner hall will benefit from a comprehensive refurbishment and restoration programme as part of the development. The combination of the refurbished listed building and the new build will reflect the school’s long-standing heritage in Bishop Auckland, whilst providing inspiring learning facilities in which young people will thrive.
The new two-storey building, which will provide state-of-the-art facilities for 950 students, will replace the existing 1970’s building; this will be demolished during the final phase of the project to make way for a number of new sports pitches and landscaping.
