St John’s Church and Shildon Methodist Church are gearing up to celebrate the Bicentenary of the Stockton and Darlington Railway together with the three local Primary Schools.
Programme of Events
Friday 4th July
10.15am – Bicentenary railway bell peal. This peal of bells lasts for 3 hours 20 minutes and was last heard 100 years ago when rung by LNER workers on 4th July 1925.
10.30am – Year 6 pupils take part in a railway engineering challenge. Year 6 pupils from Timothy Hackworth, Thornhill and St John’s Primary Schools will be at St John’s Church learning about the importance of Timothy Hackworth and Shildon’s railway history from the Locomotion’s education team, and taking part in an engineering challenge. Please note this is not a public event.
1.15pm – Reception at the Methodist Church Hall before Timothy Hackworth Thanksgiving Service. All are welcome to the Methodist Church Hall for light refreshments and to view a special bicentenary exhibition.
2.00pm – Service of Thanksgiving for the faith, life and work of Timothy Hackworth. All are invited to join a short outdoor service marking 175 years since the death of Timothy Hackworth, including guest speaker Jane Hackworth-Young, the great great granddaughter of Timothy Hackworth. This will take place at Timothy Hackworth’s grave, just inside St John’s Church churchyard.
Saturday 5th July
10-12.30pm – At St John’s Church. Free entry, something for all ages including –
Victorian railway café – themed café with home baking
Model Railway and other railway memorabilia
Railway craft stalls
Mike Amos book signing – another chance to buy a signed copy of Mike’s new book, All Change.
‘Proud to live in Shildon’ – Exhibition where pupils have written about why they are proud to live in Shildon and the chance to add your own voice.
Engineering challenge. See the pupils’ successful engineering models from the previous day and have a go yourself!
Pupil Bicentenary Banners – opportunity to view the new bicentenary banners that pupils have been working on this term.
