West Auckland Football Club has been honoured with a top award to commemorate reaching a Wembley cup final.
The Club has received Durham County Council’s, Chairman’s Medal for their outstanding achievement in reaching the Carlsberg FA Vase Final against their Northern League counterparts Dunston.
While West lost out 2-0 in May’s final, the then chairman of Durham County Council, Cllr Dennis Morgan, felt their magnificent feat merited the Chairman’s Medal.
Due to the club’s hectic schedule leading up to the final, it was not until today that the West Auckland players and officials were able to visit County Hall, Durham to receive their award.
Cllr Morgan, said, “It was a wonderful achievement by West Auckland to reach the final at Wembley and this award is fully merited.
“They highlighted the great strength of football in this region and the whole of County Durham was rightly proud of their exploits.
“I was fortunate enough to attend the final and met people from all over the county many affiliated to other clubs – who for 90 minutes were fervent West Auckland fans.
“From the first time you pull on a pair of football boots it’s every boy’s dream to run out at Wembley – the home of football – and for the players of West Auckland it was a dream that turned to reality. The result did not quite go their way, but fingers crossed, they go on and reach the final again next year and win it.”
