Pupils and teachers at Thornhill Primary School in Shildon are taking part in a national fundraising initiative to show support to one of their peers, who was recently diagnosed with cancer.
Sophie Foster, 10, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in February and her teachers and classmates will be taking part in Wig Wednesday next week to raise money for CLIC Sargent, the UK’s leading charity for children and young people with cancer.
Wig Wednesday (22nd May) is a national fundraising initiative whereby CLIC Sargent is encouraging schools, workplaces and groups of friends to wear a wig for a day and donate to the charity, while also showing support to children with cancer, like Sophie, who often lose their hair as a result of treatment.
Sophie’s mother, Paula, said, “I think Wig Wednesday is a fantastic idea and a great way to raise funds for CLIC Sargent, so I’m delighted that Sophie’s school is getting involved with it.
“Both Thornhill and CLIC Sargent have been so supportive of us since Sophie’s diagnosis in February, and it’s great that they are working together to raise money and awareness on Wig Wednesday.”
Dee Tyler, CLIC Sargent Area Fundraising Manager, said, “Being diagnosed with cancer is a frightening experience for many reasons. One particularly upsetting aspect of the journey is hair loss and having to wear a wig. This initiative is designed for people to show that they care about the children and young people who go through this experience, while also fundraising to support them.”
