Community café The Well, known locally for its welcoming atmosphere and strong commitment to supporting residents, has once again been awarded a 5-star food hygiene rating following a recent unannounced inspection by Durham County Council.
The inspection confirmed that the café continues to meet the highest standards of food safety, hygiene, and food handling practices. For a venue that is entirely run by volunteers, the achievement highlights the dedication and professionalism of the team who give their time to serve the community.
Located in West Auckland, The Well operates as much more than a traditional coffee shop. Open Tuesday to Friday from 9am to 3pm, the café provides an affordable and friendly meeting place where residents can gather for refreshments, conversation, and support. The café is run by a team of around 30 volunteers, whose collective effort ensures the venue remains a welcoming hub for the village.
Manager Samantha praised the team’s commitment following the inspection.
“Friends, we are pleased to let you know that we had an unannounced visit from Durham County Council today and have retained our 5 star rating for food safety.
Thank you so much to all of our diligent and hard working volunteers who uphold our high standards.”
Beyond serving coffee, toasties and paninis, The Well plays a crucial role in supporting residents who may be experiencing hardship. The café also hosts the village’s Trussell Trust foodbank, providing essential support to individuals and families facing food insecurity.
In February alone, the foodbank supported 76 people in food crisis, ensuring that those in need could access emergency food supplies and practical help during difficult times. The café’s volunteers not only manage the foodbank’s operations but also provide a welcoming and compassionate environment for visitors seeking assistance.
By combining a café with community outreach services, The Well has become a vital resource in West Auckland. Many visitors come for a cup of coffee but stay for the sense of connection and support that the space provides.
The team hopes that the continued 5-star hygiene rating will reassure customers and encourage more people in the area to visit, volunteer, or support the café’s work.
“Our volunteers are the heart of everything we do,” Samantha added. “Their dedication allows us to keep the café running while also supporting those in our community who need help the most.”
