46 Walkers from Aycliffe Fell Walking Club enjoyed a terrific day of walking in Northumberland. With walks from Brocolitia Fort, Chesters Fort and Brunton Top on the east side of Chollerford they all arrived safely and happy in Corbridge.
The weather was fantastic considering the rain and snow of recent days and the winter sun shone through the trees with a real intensity. There were some lovely snowy scenes especially in County Durham on the journey up to Hadrian’s Wall but less so to the north of Hexham. However, on the walk the snow laid crisp and even in some parts but mostly had thawed in the sunshine with some quite muddy sections to negotiate. This didn’t trouble these seasoned walkers with many choosing to walk routes via Acomb and Hexham before climbing out of Hexham to Fellside and some glorious views.
Back in Corbridge the walkers gathered at numerous establishments but many were particularly taken by the visit to The Pele, a two floor hostelry inside a tower in the centre of the town selling good real ale. In other establishments walkers enjoyed the televised rugby until it was time to go home. The next walk on 14 March will visit the Coquet Valley in Northumberland with walks between Rothbury and Warkworth on the Northumberland Coast.
