A gentle glow will light up Bishop Auckland this December as families gather for The Little Light Lantern Walk — a heart warming community lantern walk taking place on Saturday 13 December 2025.
Created as part of the Christmas at Newgate celebrations, the walk celebrates community spirit, family connection and the joy of slowing down together at Christmas.
Children and families are invited to come along to the Newgate Centre to make their own lanterns for free before the walk begins. A range of simple lantern designs will be available to assemble and decorate, or families can bring along their own handmade lights.
At 3.30pm, the Little Light Walk will begin inside the Newgate Centre. The procession will set off at 3.40pm, making its way down Fore Bondgate, where walkers will pause to sing carols with local shopkeepers before arriving at St Anne’s Church in the Market Place at around 3.55pm, just in time for a special family Christmas service starting at 4 pm.
“This isn’t a big light show — it’s a simple moment of togetherness and celebrating tradition,” said Andrew Lee, Centre Manager. “Last year reminded us how much people value these shared moments of joy. The Little Light Walk is about celebrating our community, kindness and keeping the true spirit of Christmas shining in Bishop Auckland.”
Reverend Matt Keddilty, Vicar of St Anne’s Church, added:
“Christmas is about light coming into the world — and The Little Light Lantern Walk captures that perfectly. It’s wonderful to see families, businesses, and the church coming together in hope and celebration. We’re really looking forward to welcoming everyone to St Anne’s.”
Local businesses along Fore Bondgate are being encouraged to take part by decorating their windows, staying open later, or offering festive treats as families pass by.
Participation is free but booking is essential due to limited space in St Anne’s church. Families can reserve their places via christmasatnewgate.co.uk.
“We’d love to see every child with a lantern and every window glowing,” Andrew added. “It’s about lighting up the heart of our town — together.”
