Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has confirmed that the Bishop Auckland Tax Office is to close, leaving the 19 people employed there uncertain about their future.
The office is just one of 130 due to close, after HMRC said it would be of benefit to customers to close smaller offices and bring staff together in larger teams. However, the Public and Commercial Services Union has stated that up to 1,700 jobs could be lost as a result.
PCS General Secretary, Mark Serwotka, said, “Access to tax advice across the UK will be damaged by the confirmation of these closures, which will hit businesses and the public, as well as taking jobs out of communities in a recession.”
