Representatives from Shildon Police, Shildon councillors, head teachers and livin all met this week outside the former HSBC bank.
The bank is now the home of Simon Romaines and Jill Parkinson, who have invested their life savings in the property. However, the couple have suffered a spate of anti social behaviour by mindless youths who have been throwing stones and putting their windows out, even though the property has CCTV.
Sergeant David Littlefair said officers know the culprits belong to families involved in previous troubles going back over a generation.
He said: “Parents have a responsibility to keep their children’s behaviour in check. We are currently en-countering a large number of complaints of youths throwing stones and eggs. This impacts on the quality of life for people and also puts a lot of demand on the police.”
Councillor Trish Pemberton said: “As a town council, we are naturally concerned that all our residents feel safe and comfortable in their homes and businesses. A minority of young people, some of whom are from outside Shildon, clearly do not understand the negative impact that their behaviour can have on other people.
“We will do all in our power to work in partnership with the police and residents, and young people them-selves, to improve the situation as we go forward.
“It is always a shame when the positive behaviour of the majority of Shildon’s young people is overshadowed by that of a minority.”
