Durham County Council have completed works to the embankments of the subway which runs beneath Carr Lane by the Ash Tree pub, after being reported by a County Councillor.
In October last year, after a local resident had contacted Cllr Pete Molloy to inform him of the difficulties for pedestrians walking through the subway due to the amount of mud that was covering its footpath, the councillor visited the subway to investigate.
When he arrived at the subway, he saw for himself the amount of mud covering the footpath, which he believed was a possible result of recent rain fall being able to wash the mud into the subway as a result of the missing retaining walls.
Cllr Molloy said: “With all the mud on the footpath running through the subway and with the destruction of a retaining wall, it was possible that this is how the mud was able to enter the subway. The footpath was a potential safety hazard for pedestrians and if the retaining walls were not repaired, it would be possible for this issue to reoccur, so I reported it in to Durham County Council for the footpath to be cleaned and for the subway to be inspected and the necessary works to be carried out.”
The works to the subway’s embankments were carried out and completed last month with a total of three new retaining walls being built at the base of the embankments and a number of gabion baskets being inserted into the embankment.
Cllr Molloy added: “I would like to thank DCC for carrying out the necessary repair works to the subway and once the grass has fully grown back, that the issue is now resolved.”
Since the repair works have been completed and due to the recent rains, Cllr Molloy has revisited the subway on a couple of occasions and reported to DCC the subway’s footpath and gully for cleaning.
