As part of their work with Durham Police and Crime Commissioner Joy Allen, Ferryhill’s Ambassadors for Community Change invited Jo from Human Kind Charity come into all the primary schools in Ferryhill and talk to year 5 and 6 pupils about energy drinks, vaping and alcohol.
Glenys from Approach Too said: “It’s really important for children and young people to develop knowledge of the consequences these can have on health, social relationships and the community. These sessions also help pupils develop the skills and ability to make healthy and safe choices.”
Mr Blood from Cleves Cross Primary added: “Our Year 5 children found their session incredibly useful and were eager to share their leaflets and knowledge with their adults at home. A couple of parents have commented on how informative it must have been based on the information children shared. The knowledge has obviously remained too as a couple of children were able to explain to me why taking energy drinks to an upcoming sporting event might not be a good idea.”
“Our Year 6 children were able to access their session with maturity and felt comfortable and confident to discuss local issues in their area too. It was great to see how Jo and her colleague were open with the children from the start and provided a safe environment where they felt comfortable sharing their answers and concerns. The children really enjoyed the opportunity to wear the beer goggles and it was great to see them respond to this. No question was too much for Jo and she attempted to answer all of them.“
