St Mary’s ‘best ever season’

St Mary’s finished off one of their best seasons ever with the U7 Kings, U8 Kings, U9 Kings, U10 Kings, U13s, U14 Kings, U14 Aces and U16s all going to the TJFA awards night at Tennis World for either winning their league or as runners up and gaining promotion.

The U10 Kings and U16s also reached their TJFA cup finals.

The U17s also received the League Cup and 1st Division League Trophy at the Russel Foster awards and have just returned from competing in the Hageland Cup in Antwerp, Belgium, which is Belgium’s largest junior football tournament.

The U17’s were the only British team competing and won their first three games on the Saturday, 3-0, 3-0 and 2-0 with goals from Harry Coulthard, Charlie Wigley, Luke Bailey, Alex Goundry, Aidan Hart before drawing the last game 1-1.

Sunday was the big test with the side managing to get into the top 8 group of teams to win the top trophy.

Drawing the first game 0-0 they then had a great 1-0 win with Charlie Wigley scoring against a team from Brussels.

This meant the team needed a win in the last game against a good Dutch team to go into the final and after going 1-0 up through Harry Coulthard a final was looking possible but the Dutch team, who went on to win the tournament, came back to win 2-1 and St Mary’s ended up finishing 5th out of the 30 teams after only conceding three goals in the tournament.

It was a massive achievement representing their club and country tremendously. The rest of the squad were: captain Robbie Anderson, Owen Stephenson, who was Player of the Tournament, Leon Sides-Roe, Ashley Adams, Jack Armstrong, Kieran Alderson, Regan Blakey and Taylor Bramhald.
