St Mary’s Action

Over the last fortnight, St Mary’s Junior Football Club has had mixed results, amassing 7 wins, 5 draws and 5 losses in 17 games. The 14A’s played away at Ferryhill last Saturday and came away with a very important 2-1 win, with 2 goals from Lewis Martin, to keep them top of the league with 100% record.

The Under 10 A’s played a 1-1 draw on Saturday away at Leven. They also lost an away match at Norton and Stockton 1-0 and played Barnard Castle in a local derby, coming away with an excellent 1-0 win.

The Under 7’s First played their first ever competitive football in a tournament over the Easter weekend at Leam Rangers. They drew 2 and narrowly lost 2 and  gave a magnificent display, with coaches Rob Welch and Craig Ellison very pleased with the boys performances.

Our featured match this week is the Under 14A’s team, who have a huge backlog of fixtures. The team played a league fixture on Saturday morning, before an  important semifinal on the Sunday afternoon.

With key players missing for various reasons, the team were left with only 11 players, some of which were carrying injuries. They approached the game in a very positive manner and with the pressure they were applying eventually broke down the opposition to go 1-0 infront with a goal from Lewis Martin, and it stayed that way until half time.

In the second half, TIBS came out stronger making the game a more even contest. St. Mary’s resolute defence worked hard to keep the visitors at bay.

With tired legs, St. Marys still managed to create the better chances, hitting the woodwork towards the end of the game.

The full time whistle blew and St. Mary’s ran out with a a deserved 1-0 victory and a place in the final at Hurworth in May.
