Earlier this year St John’s School and Sixth Form College set up a kayaking club alongside Bishop Auckland Kayak Club.
The satellite organisation is funded through Sport England, which has allowed the school to purchase equipment.
Free coaching has been available every Monday between 4pm and 5pm after the school club, which has enabled students to improve their kayaking skills and everyone involved has made excellent improvements.
Due to its success, the club has been nominated by County Durham for a regional and national award.
A spokesperson commented, “Each county can only nominate one satellite club so this is excellent for the school. A big thank you to all who have been involved in making this club a success, and well done to all of the students.”
