Bishop Auckland forces charity, SSAFA, visited Chilton recently to show their appreciation of a donation from the Coffin Dodgers charity group based at the Wheatsheaf.
The Coffin Dodgers charity band meet every Thursday night at 7pm at the Wheatsheaf, where they receive donations of whisky from residents, selling them on to pundits for one pound.
They collect the money for local charities around Chilton and SSAFA was delighted to be chosen.
A donation of £200 was given which SSAFA will use to help local veterans.
The group meets at Bishop Auckland Football Club every Friday morning giving a free bacon butter and hot drink free of charge to veterans only. They also organise trips away for veterans who feel isolated.
The group also visited an ongoing veterans mural painting that a local business has organised with help from funds from local Chilton residents.
Local County Councillor for Chilton, Stephen Bowron, who attended the night said: “Chilton people are very proud of the veterans around County Durham and Chilton and this mural is a fantastic piece of work.”
