Local theatre group Spennymoor Stage and Song are celebrating success after winning the NODA North (National Operatic and Dramatic Association) ‘Best Musical’ award for their production of The Addams Family which was staged at Spennymoor Town Hall in May.
Faith McDermott, who starred as Wednesday in the musical was also successful at the awards ceremony, held at the Grand Hotel, Gosforth Park in Newcastle as she carried off the Youth Award as ‘Best Individual’ for her stunning performance.
Additionally the group’s January 2023 pantomime Robinson Crusoe was one of the nominees for the Councillors Pantomime Award, whilst Wendy Hindmarch also received a nomination for a Councillors Award for her portrayal of Alice Beineke in The Addams Family musical.
Spennymoor Stage and Song producer Liam Etherington said: “We are absolutely delighted to have been awarded Best Musical at the NODA North awards for our production of The Addams Family. A huge amount of hard work went into making the production the success it was, and it so pleasing to see those efforts recognised with this accolade.”
Spennymoor Stage and Song (formerly Spennymoor Amateur Operatic Society) have been going since 1912 and have performed countless pantomimes, musicals and shows since, providing opportunities for local people to perform on stage and to be involved in local amateur theatre.
Fundraising is always a priority to ensure the costs of putting on shows can be covered and recently a group of members did a sponsored climb of Ben Nevis to raise funds.
Over £1,000 has been raised to date with any further donations still gratefully accepted via the Spennymoor Stage and Song Facebook page or by scanning the QR code.
Rehearsals are already underway for the January 2024 pantomime Cinderella which will be taking place at Spennymoor Town Hall from Wednesday 10th to Saturday 13th January. Evening performances begin at 7pm and there’s a Saturday matinee at 2pm.
