After hearing about the current humanitarian crisis in Europe, the children of King Street Primary and Pre-School in Spennymoor were determined to do all they could to help.
They started by organising a donation collection and last week held a non-uniform day to raise funds.
Staff were overwhelmed by the generosity of the school community, who answered the call-out for help.
In just a few days so many people donated an incredible quantity of blankets, clothing, toiletries and other items.
Pre-School teacher, Izzy Chazot said; “On Wednesday, the school’s ‘Community and Fundraising Group’ delivered sacks of donations to Jubilee Park, as well as two additional car-loads!
“Upon meeting the crew of volunteers, the children were pleased to hear that their donations would be delivered to the people of Ukraine immediately.”
On Friday, the school children dressed in blue and yellow and raised over £200 for the Red Cross appeal, to assist their efforts in providing support to refugees.
Head Teacher, Mrs Joanne Bromley added; “The school would like to thank our families for their extraordinary generosity towards the people of Ukraine and for showing our children the power of kindness.
“As a school, we strive for our children to become responsible global citizens and are now thinking of more ways that we can help our global and local community!”
