Spennymoor Boxing Academy held their annual presentation in Spennymoor WMC on Saturday the 1st of July.
Despite it being gala day there was a great turn out with local legend Ste Fothergill providing the entertainment. Special guest George Courtney, former world cup referee, was made very welcome.
The club’s fantastic coaches and officials were all given a round of applause for volunteering their time free of charge over the past 33 years, along with town councillors and sponsors who also attended.
The presentation was delivered impeccably by former Academy English international and unbeaten pro boxer Micky ‘the doggy dynamo‘ Thompson.
The year started with great sadness when club legend Micky Hopper ‘ the bopper’ passed away suddenly so the presentation started with everyone raising a glass to Micky. Awards on the night went to JJ Brondell, Riley Lowery, Layton Condrell, Annie Miller, Rhys Inchcliffe, Macie Davies, Ellis Dixon, Nolan Mcgee and Grace Angus. The best senior award went to Harry Olton Jr.
Chief Coach Robert Ellis would like to thank all of the members, some of whom didn’t win awards on the night, but with continued attendance, effort and dedication they will get there. Rob would like to thank his dedicated and loyal coaches for their hard work in keeping this club at the top of the boxing tree. “We train contenders not pretenders.” And of course a massive thanks to his wife Diane Ellis for her effort and support all year around and patience living with a man who lives and breathes boxing.
