Camping in the snow can only mean one thing… 1st Ferryhill Scouts are up to their usual tricks, reports Donald Park.
Each year in February the Scouts take part in an event called “Camp Frosty” which is a wild camp up in the dales of Frosterly near Stanhope.
Skip, the Scout Leader said: “We have been coming camping here in February for many years.
“Sometimes when we come it’s like a spring day but most of the time, we are knee deep in snow and this year it has been fantastic.
“We have been blessed with a very cold arctic blast and the fells are covered in very deep snow, so much so the van very nearly didn’t make it up the hill and our other van was stranded waiting for the farmer to tow it out”.
Only a Ferryhill Scout leader could use the word ‘blessed’ when talking about the amount of snow that came down at the weekend. “It adds to the adventure”, he said.
Adam, one of the Scouts, said: “I can’t believe we are up in the mountains with all this snow!”
Faith, another Scout said: “In our waterproofs we were able to slide down the mountain on our backsides”.
Though the Dales aren’t technically mountains, the sheer size and space makes you feel like you’re in the mountains, particularly when they are covered in snow.
With their cold red faces and great big beaming smiles it is obvious they have all had an amazing weekend.
Mad as we think they are, I know you wouldn’t catch us up there in those conditions!
“Camp Frosty” marks the eagerly anticipated start of camping activities that are held throughout the year.
