Shildon Veterans hub update

There are plans and ideas to try and revamp the Veterans Hub, writes Glenn Gibson, as it is struggling to attract people attending and it’s a service that Shildon Town Council provides and does not want to diminish.

There has been some recent re-organisation within the Council which has affected what input they have been able to contribute lately.

However, with the appointment now in place of a Community Development & Engagement Co-Ordinator by Shildon Town Council, one of their duties will be to support and promote the Veterans Hub, linking in with other local groups and organisations for continued support.

For the Hub to continue, we need veterans and their families to attend.

The Resthouse is in a beautiful location overlooking Hackworth Park with fantastic views.

It has plenty of space for children to play and dogs to walk, which makes it an ideal spot to sit and relax, enjoy a chat and a cuppa.

The book club side is up and running and fundraising can still progress if people attend as this is a great opportunity to put something back into the community and contribute to local projects.

The Hub is also a place where veterans who need support can come and be guided towards the specific direction for help.

It is a place where veterans can applied for their Armed Forces Veterans card which allows discounts in a wide variety of retail outlets and eateries.

There are a lot of things happening for veterans in Shildon. The Shildon Branch – Royal British Legion meets on the second Tuesday of month from 7pm at Shildon Railway Institute, while the Masonic Hall hoests a veterans breakfast club.

So, please come along and support the Veterans’ Hub and be part of something meaningful. Help us support those who have or are still serving in His Majesty’s Armed Forces.

Continued thanks as always to Shildon Town Council, Shildon Alive and Health Express and to those veterans who attend and enjoy the banter and chat.

Meanwhile, the next next meeting and get together will take place on Wednesday 18 June from 11am to 2pm at the Resthouse. We look forward to seeing you.
