After a successful summer period for the Veterans Hub with an amazing number of veterans and their families attending the picnic we hosted in August, we have sadly seen a decline in numbers, writes Charlotte Battison.
We had the support of Health Watch during October’s meet up with the lovely Lynsey coming and supporting the hub. She provided information about what Health Watch do and current support they are offering about hospital booking systems and the unfortunate reduction of some medications. Unfortunately, not a great turn out for her, but she provided contact details to ensure we share and make sure veterans get the support they need.
We need the continued support from veterans and their families to attend. The Resthouse is in a beautiful location overlooking the park with fantastic views. There’s space for children to play and dogs to walk which makes this an ideal spot to sit and relax, enjoy a chat and a cuppa.
If anyone wants to help and support the veterans of the town and surrounding areas, please feel free to pop in and have a chat.
If anyone has ideas to help bring more people into the Veterans Hub, we would welcome any suggestions, especially from fellow veterans.
We want to keep this space to support our veterans in the local area, they can come and be assisted towards the specific direction for help. It is also a place where veterans can apply for their Armed Forces Veterans card which allows discounts in a wide variety of retail outlets and eateries.
There are still a lot of things happening for veterans in Shildon. The Shildon Branch – Royal British Legion meet on the second Tuesday of Month from 7pm in the Railway Institute and the Masonic Hall provide a Veterans Breakfast Morning.
So please come along and support the Veterans Hub and be part of something meaningful. Help us support those who have or still serving in His Majesty’s Armed Forces.
