Shildon RAC’s overseas star distance runner Kate Avery continues to dazzle in the states, as her latest run over 10,000m left her with the European Championships “A” standard and a UK top 5 ranking.
“Well done Kate and good luck in your quest for selection in the Commonwealth Games / European Championships,” said a spokesperson.
Middlesbrough Mandale this week hosted the final Cyrill Elliott Open Meet at Clairville Stadium. The weather was gloomy with frequent heavy showers and a unpredictable headwind. Nevertheless Shildon’s athlete’s stuck to their task and brought home plenty of medals.
Once again the u13g sprinters shone like beacons in the gloom with Rachel Bennett striking double sprint gold over 100m and 150m.
Maddie Wells was only just behind, claiming the runners-up spot to Rachel in both events, as the girls continue to swap superiority in their tussle for age group supremacy.
Not too far back and still with another year in the age group, Katie Williams continues to give warning of her potential with a heat victory and overall 4th place finish in the 100m. Also competing from the bottom end of the age group, Leah Rutherford and Amy Leah Hutchinson gave promise of future improvement with determined displays in the 2 sprint events.
Chloe Fairclough also enjoyed a run out in the short sprint before returning to her favoured middle distance events later in the day, when Chloe made her debut over 1200m and promptly battled her way through a tough field to finish in 7th place.
Ellie Geary continues to gain experience in the u11g age group which will aid future development in the sprints. Ellie showed excellent technique and spirit as she competed in the 60m, 150m and long jump in difficult conditions.
In the junior women’s age group, Georgia Hirst gave a season’s best performance over 300m to claim u20w silver, while Rachel McHugh took home gold in both the lj and tj events.
Ryan Etherington was another to contest the tj and lj only in the senior mens events. Ryan continues to develop his jumping skills and claimed just rewards with a silver medal in the tj.
Jade Hepple (u15g) is another young jump talent in the development phase and she finished an unlucky 4th in the lj while running a big pb in the 100m sprint. Over in the Middle distance events Ryan Watson (u15b) battled the conditions to finish 6th over 1500m and Harrison Dalglish (u15b) claimed bronze in a new pb over 800m.
Adam Hanby (u13b) tackled the 600m/150m and would have gained invaluable experience for future events. To finish the day shildons u13g sprint relay team (Rachel, Maddie, Katie and Leah) overcame another downpour to take 1st place in the 4x100m.
