Shildon Railway CC 1st XI recorded an excellent 20 run victory over Whitby CC in Division Two on Saturday, overcoming early batting difficulties before a disciplined bowling performance sealed the win.
After electing to bat, Shildon found themselves under immediate pressure.
Greg ran out brother Bret, before also falling early to leave Shildon 10-2, with further setbacks taking the score to a paltry 88-6.
At that stage, Whitby appeared firmly in control. However, a superb innings from Shane Rowley turned the match.
Rowley produced a composed and determined 55, his first ever half century for the Shildon 1st XI, combining patience with timely aggression to rebuild the innings.
Supported by Phillip Garbutt (27) and useful contributions from Joe Knowles (24) and Thomas Jacobs (21), Shildon recovered impressively to post 178 all out from 40.4 overs.
The partnership between Rowley and Garbutt proved pivotal, changing the innings and giving Shildon a total that looked increasingly competitive on a challenging surface.
There was also a significant moment in the club’s history as Jen Knowles became the first female player to represent Shildon Railway CC 1st XI.
Although not required to score in the closing stages of the innings, she faced a ball at the end of an over to allow Rowley to hit multiple boundaries in the next over, giving him the opportunity to hit his maiden 1st XI 50 and boost the team’s score.
Her appearance marked an important milestone for the club and alongside multiple female appearances for the 2nd XI highlighting the continued growth and development of the game.
Whitby’s reply began well, reaching 61-0 before the first breakthrough was made and then in reaching 82-1 with less than 100 to win, it again looked like they were on their way to victory.
Shildon’s bowlers and fielders, however, maintained pressure and struck at crucial moments.
The standout performer with the ball was overseas star Aayush Lekhwani, who claimed four wickets for 50 runs from 11.5 overs, while Rowley completed an outstanding all round display with a fantastic spell of 3 for 16 from 8 overs.
Joe Knowles played his role, taking 2 for 30, while Farhan Ali also chipped in with a wicket.
A decisive passage of play saw Whitby slide from 118-4 to 123-7, with Shildon sensing their opportunity and refusing to relent.
Whitby battled back and reached 151-8, but the visitors held their nerve to dismiss the home side for 158 in 36.5 overs, securing a deserved victory by 20 runs.
The result was built on resilience and teamwork with nine men and one woman earning Shildon the maximum 25 league points in an historic day at the seaside.
Meanwhile, the 2s played host to Catterick Village on Saturday with high hopes after last week’s victory against Northallerton.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, the Railwaymen’s innings got off to a rocky start with opener Nathan Lawson getting a daisy cutter second ball.
Catterick picked up a couple more quick wickets and Shildon looked in trouble at 39-3.
JP Reynolds (22) and Matty Franklin (22) added some stability to the innings before Andrew Clegg played a destructive innings falling short of a maiden ton, blasting 98 from just 78 deliveries, including 11 fours and 6 sixes, building healthy 50+ partnerships with Vinnie McCormick (18) and Darren Waites (a career best 21*).
Clegg fell LBW to close the innings on 230, and the team confident with the first half.
In reply, Clegg and Waites continued their partnership, this time with the ball, as Clegg (2-15) got the first scalp of the day, before the Darren Waites show commenced.
In the third best bowling spell ever by a Shildon bowler, he ripped through the Catterick order, claiming not only a hat trick, but 5 wickets in 5 balls, narrowly missing out on a double hat trick.
His final figures of 7-17 off 7.5 overs was enough to win the 2s maximum points, and together with his knock with the bat, more than enough to win player of the match.
